Employee Spotlight: Curtis Cello on Helping Business Owners Break Through to Success

From Fortune 500 Boardrooms to Main Street: Curtis Brings Big Business Insights to Small Business Owners

For over two decades, Curtis Cello has been bridging two worlds. With a career that spans both Fortune 500 companies and small business consulting, he’s developed a unique perspective on what truly makes businesses succeed—and it often comes down to something simpler than most owners expect.

As a Field Service Manager at Partner America, Curtis travels the country meeting with business owners face-to-face, helping them identify what’s holding them back and showing them the path forward. His approach? Equal parts tough love and genuine support, wrapped in decades of experience.

A Different Perspective on Business Success

Curtis’ background in large multinational corporations gives him a distinct vantage point when working with small business owners.

“I spent most of my career in companies with significant structure and management systems,” Curtis explains. “What I’ve learned is that small businesses can dramatically improve by implementing some of these professional management practices—but adapted to their scale and needs.”

This isn’t about turning a family business into a corporate machine. It’s about finding the right balance between entrepreneurial spirit and professional management that allows businesses to grow sustainably.

The Common Thread Among Successful Owners

After visiting thousands of businesses across virtually every industry, Curtis has identified clear patterns that separate thriving businesses from those that struggle.

“Successful business owners have a constant motivation to improve and reinvent themselves,” he shares. “They refuse to rest on their laurels. They recognize that even if they’re the best today, they might not be tomorrow if they stop evolving.”

But perhaps most importantly, Curtis emphasizes that successful owners are open-minded and willing to look inward.

“They’re not defensive. They realize that not only can they improve, but their entire team can improve. It starts from the top—leadership sets the tone for continuous improvement throughout the organization.”

Shifting Mindsets, Not Just Strategies

One of the biggest challenges Curtis encounters is helping business owners move past the tendency to blame external factors for their struggles. Whether it’s the economy, taxes, workforce challenges, or market conditions, it’s natural for owners to look outward when things get tough.

“Every business owner I’ve worked with has genuine challenges,” Curtis acknowledges. “The economy changes, costs rise, markets shift—these are real issues. But here’s what I’ve observed: in every challenging environment, there are always businesses that figure out how to thrive despite the obstacles.”

Curtis often asks owners thought-provoking questions to help them see their situation differently. When they share their goals for growth and profitability, he asks about their concrete plans to get there.

“When owners realize they’re relying on external factors to change rather than taking control of what they can influence, that’s often the turning point,” he explains. “That’s when they start looking at how they can improve internally, and that’s where real transformation begins.”

The Power of Removing Skepticism and Denial

At its core, Curtis sees Partner America’s role as helping remove the mental barriers that keep business owners stuck.

“We didn’t invent how to run a successful restaurant or construction company,” he says candidly. “These successful models already exist. The question is: why can’t every business owner achieve that level of success? Usually, it’s because something is blocking them from seeing what’s possible.”

Curtis recalls working with a construction company owner who had built his business to nearly $100 million in revenue over 20 years—an incredible achievement by any measure. But success had brought its own challenges.

“He couldn’t get off the phone when I visited. People were constantly knocking on his door. The entire company revolved around him,” Curtis remembers. “He wanted a business that could run without him being involved in every decision, and he wanted to prepare it for his daughter to take over. But the company was still being run like it was a small business.”

Through Partner America’s support, the owner was able to implement proper organizational structure and systems appropriate for a company of that size. The transformation didn’t just improve the business—it gave the owner his life back.

The Current Landscape: Challenges and Opportunities

Curtis has noticed significant changes in the small business landscape in recent years, particularly around owner mindset and motivation.

“Many business owners have become fatigued, especially post-COVID,” he observes. “They’ve been through so much change and challenge that some have lost motivation. They still want success, but they’re tired of fighting for it.”

This fatigue often manifests as complacency or a sense that the deck is stacked against them. But Curtis sees this as an opportunity for transformation.

“Once we help an owner shift their mindset from ‘what’s the use?’ to ‘I can make this work,’ magic starts happening,” he says. “They start finding solutions they couldn’t see before. They discover efficiencies they thought were impossible. Their team responds to their renewed energy and leadership.”

Small Business, Big Business: Bridging the Gap

One of Curtis’s most valuable insights comes from comparing how small businesses operate versus their larger counterparts.

“Think about a public company CEO,” he suggests. “They have to forecast earnings, present plans to the board, and be held accountable for results. They can’t just blame external factors—they have to show how they’ll overcome challenges.”

Small business owners, by contrast, often don’t have anyone holding them accountable in the same way. They don’t have to create formal business plans or prove their strategies will work.

“Less than 1% of the business owners I’ve met have a business plan that would pass a basic business course,” Curtis notes. “And these aren’t unintelligent people—many have MBAs from top schools. They know what they should do; they just don’t do it.”

The key difference? Accountability and structure. Partner America helps provide both, giving owners the framework and support they need to manage their businesses more professionally while maintaining their entrepreneurial edge.

Advice for Business Owners: Simple but Powerful

When asked for his most important piece of advice for business owners, Curtis doesn’t hesitate:

“You can improve. That’s where it all starts.”

He follows up with an equally important reminder: “Someone can always do better than you. Even if you’re improving, you can improve over your improvement. It’s like Michael Jordan used to say—If you run into a wall, don’t turn around and give up. Figure out how to climb it, go through it, or work around it.”

Curtis points to game-changing innovations as proof that no industry is ever “figured out” completely. Who would have thought someone could revolutionize the taxi industry with an app, or consolidate retail into an online marketplace?

“You don’t have to come up with the next big innovation,” he clarifies. “You just need to be the best at what you do. And that requires constant improvement and an open mind.”

Looking Forward with Purpose

For Curtis, the work isn’t just about improving businesses—it’s about improving lives.

“Business owners are people with families, dreams, and responsibilities beyond their companies,” he reflects. “When we help them get their businesses under control, they get their lives back. They spend more time with family. They rediscover why they started their business in the first place.”

After more than two decades of helping business owners, Curtis remains passionate about the work because he sees its real impact every day. Whether it’s saving a company from closing its doors or helping an owner finally take a vacation, the transformations he witnesses remind him why this work matters.

“Every business owner wants to succeed,” Curtis emphasizes. “Sometimes they just need someone in their corner who can help them see past their current challenges and show them what’s possible. That’s what Partner America does, and that’s why I love being part of it.”
